A great way for young children to have meaningful conversations is for them to have some open-ended questions that they can ask other children. I was inspired to put together this list of get to know you questions for kids because although my kids have great social skills, they could spend a whole day with someone new and never ask that other child questions to actually get to know them.
Unless it is a good friend of theirs, I can ask them simple questions about their new friends such as how old they are or what their favorite color is and they will have no idea. Now, I know that younger kids especially, may not have the desire to get to know people on a deeper level, but just being able to spark conversations with other kids is a good idea!

Getting Your Kids More Comfortable Asking Questions

Remind them also that sometimes they will get one-word responses from other kids, especially if they are shy, so to just be able to try to make that kid feel comfortable. When you are sitting at your dinner table, the best thing you can do is to find out more about your kids and family by asking them questions that you may not yet know. This will get them comfortable in conversation as well. One big downfall of social media is that is taking away from one on one and face to face conversations between people. It really makes younger children less social and not able to start conversations in person as much. The best gift you can give your kiddos is your time and show them how to hold a conversation and be social without their phones in their hands.
