Let’s talk parent-child date ideas. Spending one-on-one time with our children is so important, but carving out quality time can be difficult, especially if you have more than one child.

My husband and I have been doing this for a few years now, and having these parent-child dates is something my kids really look forward to. So, I’m excited to share more about how we do it and also, tons of parent-child date ideas!

Why We Do Dates with Our Kids + How We Do It

We have 3 kids, and a few years back as they started getting bigger (our youngest is now 5), we realized how hard it is for anyone to even complete a sentence around here without being interrupted. All 3 of them are constantly fighting for our attention, and there just isn’t enough to go around. We decided to start carving out time to do one-on-one dates with each child, and it’s become probably the most important thing we do with them.

How We Plan Parent-Child Dates with 3 Kids

There is no real right or wrong way to do this, and I think it’s something that has to evolve over time, but this is how we’ve been doing it, to give you some ideas:

  • I rotate and plan my own dates with each child, and Chris rotates and plans his own dates with each child.
  • We try to make it so the same child isn’t on their turn with both of us at the same time.
  • We work together to coordinate when/where we want to go so the other parent can keep the other 2 children.
  • We use each other’s ideas if they go well. For example: I took my son on a kayaking tour that we loved so much, that my husband used that as his date with my daughter next.
  • We let the kids give ideas of things they’d like to do, but also tell them if their ideas are too big or expensive of an ask.
  • We sometimes make it a more special date (more expensive, longer/overnight) but in general, try to keep it budget-friendly and within a few-hour timeframe so it’s sustainable.
  • We take “off” summer, because we spend a lot of time together and take trips as a family during the summer.
  • We adjust as we go, depending on what life is like. For example, we used to do weekly dates for a while, so the kids got more frequent dates. However, now that they’re getting older and involved in more sports and activities, we are on monthly dates. This is the only way it’s sustainable with everyone’s current schedule.

Here are some of the reasons why parent-child dates are important:

  • Each child gets the undivided attention of that parent, even for a short time
  • It gives you a chance to really bond with them and even really get to know them better
  • It’s a fun way to try new things together, because you can get creative to plan a great date (and has led me to try several new things for the first time)
  • When parents set aside time for just their child, it makes the child feel valued, loved, and special, boosting their confidence and self-worth.
  • Spending intentional time together creates a safe space for children to open up about their thoughts, feelings, and any challenges they might be facing.
  • Shared experiences during these dates often become cherished memories that both parents and children will remember fondly, strengthening their bond over time.
  • By doing different activities, from cooking to crafting, you teach your child practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and social etiquette in real-life settings.
  • When a child feels connected and valued, they are more likely to engage in positive behavior at home and in school, knowing their parent is invested in their well-being.
  • Parent-child dates are a great way to unplug from screens and spend quality time in the real world, engaging in meaningful activities and conversations.
  • Intentional time with a parent can reduce feelings of anxiety or stress in children, knowing that they have a reliable and loving support system.
  • Through shared activities, parents can instill important family values such as kindness, patience, respect, and gratitude in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.
  • Spending time together in a relaxed, fun setting helps parents and children build a relationship based on enjoyment and mutual respect, rather than just discipline and routines.
  • In busy families, intentional dates reaffirm the parent’s presence in the child’s life, reinforcing the importance of prioritizing family relationships.

I’ve tried to break up the ideas below into categories. Here are a few ideas to start, then we’ll get into outdoor, indoor, creative, educational ideas and more:
