Let’s settle the debate, “Does coffee with creamer break a fast?” First, where are all my creamer obsessed friends out there? I like coffee with my creamer, if you know what I mean. My husband though, does intermittent fasting and often suggests I do it too. Well, I would be happy to, but there’s just one enormous issue – I cannot give up my creamer! So, the research began. Let’s dive in!
If you are one of my fellow coffee drinkers and you are wanting to follow an intermittent fasting schedule but you are unsure whether coffee creamer will break that, this post is for you!
What is Intermittent Fasting?
Intermittent fasting is a lifestyle that a lot of people choose to follow long term because it is a great option if you are looking for fat loss and health benefits in general. Your body has two states, its fed state and its fasted state. When you are feeding your body, your insulin levels spike making it harder for your body to burn fat. That is where the fasting comes in and what makes it an excellent choice if you are really wanting to see fat loss results. When you are fasting, your insulin levels lower and are able to reach your stored fat. This normally happens between 8-12 hours after you feed your body, that is why you wait such a long period of time to eat again.
Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
Your overall health is greatly impacted by doing this way of fasting. Some benefits, along with less belly bloating, are that it helps you stay regulated, it helps reduce acid reflux, and helps with stomach/digestion pain. It also helps with weight loss, improving blood sugar and brain function. The health reasons alone make it a very popular way of life and it has become even more popular in recent years.
Tips to Successful Intermittent Fasting
- Drink plenty of water, soda water helps to keep you full while not adding calories.
- Stay busy- when you are busy, naturally you are not thinking as much about eating rather than just being home lounging around.
- Drink black coffee or tea to help curb your hunger- don’t use natural sweeteners or artificial sweeteners.
- When those hunger waves strike during your fasting period, drink a good amount of water or tea.
- Try it for one month to really see and feel a difference. In your eating windows, try to eat as healthy as possible
- Choose an eating schedule that works for you so you can better stick to it.
- The biggest chunk of fasting time may be done sleeping so its less awake time of not eating.
Does Coffee With Cream Break a Fast?
This is a very debatable question and one of the most common questions when it comes to fasting. The good news, coffee lovers, is that you can still enjoy your morning cup of coffee with a little bit of creamer! It may not fully break your fast; however, it will slow down the fat-burning state. So, if you are aiming for weight loss, you want to try to stay in that fasted state in order to burn the most fat. If you are still wanting some creamer in your morning coffee, I do have some creamers below that would be a great choice for you. The general rule of thumb is to not exceed 50 calories while you are doing your intermittent fasting diet, so make sure you do pay attention to the serving sizes!
You may just want a little sweet taste in your coffee but also don’t want to break your fast and if that is you, here are your creamer options:
Nutpods Coffee Creamer
Nutpods are a good option for a low-calorie coffee creamer. It comes in a variety of flavors and if you don’t use too much, you will stay within the amount of calories needed to stay in your fasted state. I linked it here for you, from Target but you can find it at many different grocery stores so it is easily accessible!
Califia Creamers
Califia Creamers are a great option for intermittent fasting coffee creamer! It is a little higher in calories than the Nutpods creamer but will still keep you below the calorie count to keep you fasting. It does have a little bit of sugar, so be careful with how much you use.
Nestle Coffee-Mate Coffee Creamer (Zero Sugar)
Although Nestle Coffee-Mate Zero Sugar coffee creamer is not zero calories, it does have zero sugar which makes it a good option for those following this lifestyle!
So, Will My Fast Break if I Indulge in Creamer?
Bottom line, no it will not break your fast to enjoy a little creamer in your coffee. The best option to avoid breaking your fast is to choose a creamer with fewer calories and be sure to watch your serving size! Don’t get carried away, and you should be fine to enjoy your morning cup of joe.
