If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know I work from home. I have been working remotely full-time for almost 9 years. More and more, especially recently, I am being asked about companies that hire remote workers.

Remote Work Opportunities
In COVID times and as the way we work evolves in these tech-heavy times, more companies are building a remote team and offering remote positions. The use of cloud applications allows remote employees to share data, projects, and more with team members, as if they were in the same office, rather than each in their own home office.
Within the past year, the United States has become more open to remote roles. If you are looking for a new job with a remote company, this is a great place to start.

Tips for Finding the Right Type of Remote Work for You
My biggest encouragement to you would be to approach finding a remote job in much the same way that you would a “regular job”, except with even more care in thinking about what is really going to work for you.
Just because it’s a “work-from-home” job doesn’t mean it’s the RIGHT work-from-home job for you.
Most people who are looking for companies that hire remote workers are looking to work-from-home for a particular reason. Maybe it’s so you can be home with your children. Maybe it’s so you can travel more and still work from anywhere. Maybe you just like the idea of wearing pajamas all day. Whatever your reason, you need to know what it is and how it will impact what type of remote job is right for you.
Don’t just get excited because you “get to work from home”. “Getting” to work from home can be miserable if you’re doing the wrong job for your circumstances.
Questions to ask yourself when looking for the right opportunity to work remotely:
- Do you want/need to work a set amount of hours per week, or would working on a per project or freelance basis work better for you?
- Would being on the phone a lot be okay for you, or do you need a job where there are little to no phone calls?
- Would set working hours (for example: 8am-2pm) and days work for you, or do you need to be able to put in your hours while the kids are sleeping, or while you’re off from another job?
- Do you prefer being paid as a general contractor, or would you rather be an employee with possibility of benefits?
- How much money do you need to make per week or month?
- Are you okay with invoicing and waiting to be paid, or do you need to be paid on a regular basis (weekly or bi-weekly, for example)?
I suggest asking yourself all of these questions and getting a really clear idea of what type of work you’re looking for. Otherwise, you are going to find yourself all excited about a remote job, only to find out it’s nearly impossible to be on the phone all day with little kids around. Or, you’re going to be super disappointed when your dream work-from-home job turns out to be just like working in an office because you’re stuck at your desk from 8am-5pm, still at the mercy of “business hours”.

Benefits of Remote Work
There are many benefits to remote working. As someone who worked in a traditional office setting for 7+ years and has now worked remotely for almost 9 years, I know the contrast well. Most people who work from home report a better work-life balance. Many people are actually more productive as a result of this balance, and the good news is that companies are realizing this and leaning more towards a remote workforce. There are many flexible jobs, some even with a very flexible schedule. For me personally, deciding to work remotely was one the best decisions I could have made. When I became remote, I was still working a full-time job in a salaried position. Now I own my own business and hire remote workers myself.
