Meet Brandie, Wife, Mom, and VIPKid Teacher

I am an adventurer at heart and I love learning about different cultures. After graduating from Virginia Tech in 2008 (goo Hokies!), I moved to East Africa where I lived and worked for four years. I taught English to inner city street kids and worked as Year 4 teacher at a British International School. I also met my husband on this adventure. We moved to Naples, FL, got married and now we are raising our 3 children (ages 5, 4, and 2). I homeschool our oldest who is in Kindergarten.

When did you start teaching for VIP Kid?

I started working for VIPKid in January 2017, just six months before our youngest daughter was born.

What made you want to get into teaching for VIPKid at home?

I have always had a love for teaching, but not in the most conventional ways. This is one of those out-of-the box methods of teaching I love because it allows me to work with kids of other cultures, while having a flexible schedule and still be able to stay home with my own kids.

What is your favorite thing or the best perks about teaching from home for VIPKid?

My favorite part about teaching for this company is the flexible hours and that I can make my own schedule. I have my regular students who I know and see weekly and it brings me joy to see them and interact with them. Most of my students are ages 9-12. I open up class times I’d like to teach and the students are able to book me. I work as an independent contractor.

What is your least favorite part or hard aspects of teaching for VIPKid?

Because the students are in China, there is a time difference. This is convenient in some ways because I work while my kids sleep (I choose  early morning but there are late at night options as well). It can get quite exhausting if I don’t schedule some days to sleep in.

What are the requirements for becoming a teacher for VIPKid?

The company requires a Bachelor’s degree (in any field) and experience with ESL. They provide training and certification opportunities to teachers but usually, to be hired in this competitive market, there has to be some form of experience in this field.

How do VIPKid teachers get paid?

We are paid twice a month through direct deposit/wire transfer.

What is your monthly income from teaching from home?

My monthly income ranges from about $800 (about 10 hours a week)-$1600 (about 20 hours a week) depending on how many classes I teach and how busy the booking season is. Some teachers choose to teach more and some to teach less, there is a lot of freedom with this company and we make our own schedules.

What is your schedule like? About how many hours per week do you work?

My regular schedule is to teach six classes each morning from 4am-7am Monday through Friday. Each class is 25 minutes long. The classes are all one-on-one and the slides and lessons are all prepared and ready according to each student’s level. There is very little work to do outside of the actual class time.

What do you find is the biggest hurdle women face today when it comes to working and raising a family?

I find the biggest hurdle facing women today is the pressure we put on ourselves. We feel this need to do it all and be it all for everyone and it can create anxiety and stress. We want to be the perfect wife, mother, friend, employee and it wears us down. Especially when we feel we’re not doing our best in these roles.

How do you balance motherhood with teaching from home?

I don’t balance it well all the time but I try to find balance by not overcommitting. I have learned to say no, or not right now to certain activities and commitments and it can be quite freeing. My current teaching job allows me to work in the mornings before my kids get up and that way I can be more available to them during the day (when I’m not overly tired because of the constant early mornings).

If someone wanted to do what you are doing, how could they get started?

The application process is a little lengthy, but simple enough. I would be happy to walk through the process with anyone because there are a few different stages before getting hired. It starts with an initial application and is followed up with an interview and mock class. VIPKID likes to hire people who are referred by current teachers. When applying, you can use my Referral code: BRAND0016
