As a mom of 3, I know that picking out baby girl first and middle names can feel like a lot of pressure. After all, you are giving a human being the name they’ll live with for the rest of their life! There are tons of first and middle name combinations that you can choose for your little girl, from names that have a special meaning to a name of a family member you may want to honor, and unique names if you prefer.

As part of my name ideas series, I’m excited to share a huge list of ideas for baby girl first and middle names to help you be inspired by the perfect name for your little one!

Tips for Choosing Baby Girl First and Middle Names

In my mind, there is no right and wrong, especially these days, when it comes to choosing first and middle name combos. We really wanted unique boy names when we had our first, and then tried to continue that trend for all of our kids’ first names. Then for their middle names, we chose a more traditional name for each of them from our family. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect combination for your little one:

Think of Possible Nicknames When Considering Baby Girl First and Middle Names

What our kid’s nicknames would be was a big deciding factor in choosing their names. We knew we wanted our first to be named Kai, but wanted a more unique name, so we named him Kaiper and his nickname (which everyone knows him by now) is Kai. For our second, I was looking for unique girl names and Chris really liked the nickname Lani, so we settled on Alana. Funny though, her nickname ended up becoming Lana Cole because her middle name is Nicole and Kai used to call her Lana Cole when he was too little to say her full name right. For our third, I decided the name would be Koa whether it was a boy or a girl.

Great Meanings

Choosing a name with a special meaning can really make your baby’s name that much more sentimental. For example, baby girl names such as Lena, which means ray of light, or Gabrielle, which means God is my strength, would be very good middle names or first names.

Utilize Your Family Tree

There may be a family name somewhere in your family tree that you may want name your new baby after, like we did. Choosing a family name, especially an older one, can also help with avoiding super common names. When it comes to your daughter’s name, you can choose to name her after her grandma, your grandma, an aunt, or even choose one of their middle names to use as her first name. There are so many possible baby name combinations when you look into your family history. Our first’s middle name comes from my husband’s grandfather, our daughter’s middle name is also my sister’s middle name, and our third’s middle name was my husband’s step-father’s middle name.

Consider a Unisex Name

When thinking of beautiful girl name combinations, consider using a unisex name. Some of my favorite names are gender-neutral names, making choosing a name even easier! If you have a unisex name that you love, then you can use that for your son or daughter’s name. You don’t need a masculine name for a boy, and you don’t need to choose a feminine name for a girl. There are no rules when it comes to picking out your child’s name…remember that!

Say the Full Name Out Loud

While thinking of unique combinations for your little girl, make sure that you are saying their full name out loud! Don’t forget to include your last name when saying their name out loud and writing it out. You want to make sure you love the way their full name will sound and look on paper. If you are thinking of giving your child a long first name, try to make sure that they will be able to spell it easily when learning to write. It is a good idea to think of your baby having to spell their name and others having to pronounce it in the future. But, I really wouldn’t let this be a huge deciding factor because people are used to unique names these days.

A Huge List of Baby Girl First and Middle Names

Deciding on your daughter’s name can be stressful but also fun and exciting! There are so many different things to consider when choosing your baby girl’s name, and endless name options! You will eventually find the most perfect middle name and first name, so just have fun with it and consider these tips while you are browsing. You can either choose the most popular baby girl name or choose one that is super unique and not very common.
