This year so far we have had three dental appointments for my 5 year old. He ended up with cavities in between his teeth in the back. Let’s just say, the flossing struggle is real. For a long time, I struggled with how to make brushing teeth fun for kids. And flossing, forget about it. I mean, it’s not fun for me, so I can’t blame them.
After having a tooth pulled and hearing mom and dad complain about all the money they’re spending at the dentist, my five year old still wasn’t excited about brushing and flossing. Until, I found the trick. I finally figured out how to make brushing teeth fun for kids. Now when I ask the kids to go brush their teeth, I don’t even have to ask Kai to floss, he just does it. And he thinks it’s fun. Major mom win.[AffiliateLinks]
How to Make Brushing Teeth Fun for Kids
We tried reading books, singing songs, using timers and just about everything else before I realized that what worked for my 5 year old was just making him feel like a big kid. So we did two things: got him an awesome “big kid” electric toothbrush, just like mommy and daddy use, and his very own water flosser. He was so excited to see that he had his very own package of fancy new gadgets for his teeth.
VITCHELO Kids Electric Toothbrush
For the toothbrush, we chose the rechargeable VITCHELO Kids Electric Toothbrush. The vibration on it is more comfortable for him than the toothbrushes I was buying at the grocery store. You know, the ones that are electric but the batteries die quickly, the head can’t be changed out, and you have to buy a new one for $6-7 every time. I wish I had found the VITCHELO sooner, because I could have saved myself money in the long run. I lost count of how many $7 tooth brushes I’ve purchased.
The VITCHELO is also safe to use in the shower, if your child prefers that. It gets even better though, with a 2-minute auto brushing coach and 30-second timer. This helps children increase the time spent on each quadrant, and keeps them engaged as they learn to BRUSH FOR LONGER.
The VITCHELO Kids Electric Toothbrush also has a long battery life, lasting about 30 days for twice day brushing. Although, if your kids are like mine you’ll have to hide the USB charger port. Kai loves to plug it in. Kids and the little things.
VITCHELO New UPGRADED Rechargeable Cordless Portable Water Flosser
We were familiar with water flossers before we started trying to figure out how to make teeth brushing fun for kids. Still, I don’t know why we never thought of actually getting our kids one. My husband uses one daily, and even let Kai try it once. His is large though, and you can’t move around at all because of the large base that has to be plugged in.
I was buying flavored flossing picks for the kids, and they were “using them”, which I put in quotations because they were mostly using them as weapons against each other. Kai kept getting them stuck in his teeth too, which was traumatizing for all involved. It was just not good.
Enter the VITCHELO Rechargeable Cordless Portable Water Flosser. Kai loves this thing. I have never seen my child floss so much, without being asked. He just does it. It’s a miracle, mom win, whatever you want to call it.
We also love that it’s portable, easy to throw in a bag and take with us when we travel, has multiple speed settings, and is USB rechargeable. Now get this Moms…the 10 ounce water tank is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning between uses. This is a win for us, because this mama does not need any more things to wash or clean.
Other Ideas for How to Make Teeth Brushing Fun for Kids
As we all know, what works for one kid won’t work for all. The VITCHELO line of products will certainly work for ALL kids, but you may still need to get creative to encourage USE. So first go ahead and grab your kids a VITCHELO Kids Electric Toothbrush and a VITCHELO Rechargeable Cordless Portable Water Flosser. There are color options for boys and girls. Then if you need to, use some of these ideas:
- Play your child’s favorite song while they brush. Since most songs are between 2-3 minutes long, this is a great substitute for a timer.
- Consider getting a timer, or use the timer on your VITCHELO Kids Electric Toothbrush
- Brush your teeth with your kids at the same time in the morning and evening, and have them copy you. Kids love to play a copying game.
- If you have an older family member with dentures or false teeth, have them show your kids. This was a big eye opener when my grandfather showed my kids that he had no teeth left!
- Teach your kids the animal teeth game, this makes teeth brushing fun for kids: tiger teeth (together), hippo mouth (mouth open) and snake tongue (brush tongue).
- A reward chart works well for most children!
When it comes to figuring out how to make teeth brushing fun for kids, this is what worked for us. I would definitely saying that the turning point came when we got ourVITCHELO Kids Electric Toothbrush and a VITCHELO Rechargeable Cordless Portable Water Flosser, but also letting Kai be independent and do it himself (then checking after) has helped too.
Happy teeth brushing!
