My kids love it when we have a “make your own pizza” dinner! It’s such a fun and easy way to do dinner. In this post, I’ll share how to prep for a “make your own pizza” dinner, everything you’ll need, and tons of topping ideas.

What is a “Make Your Own Pizza” Dinner?

The name basically says it all, everyone makes their own personal pizza! You start with your favorite crust, set up a toppings bar, and let everyone customize their own personal pie. Then bake and enjoy!

My photos aren’t that great because they are technically screenshots from videos, but hey they gave you the idea!

What You’ll Need for a Make Your Own Pizza Dinner

I love how simple and easy this dinner idea is, and it’s a really fun way to get the whole family involved in doing something together. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Crust: You can choose a storebought pizza dough that you have to roll out to extend the hands-on experience, a pre-made flat-bread or regular pizza crust that is already cooked, or go all out and make your own pizza dough.
  • Toppings: Prepare all your favorite toppings. I like to pre-cook meats like sausage and pre-cut vegetables. You can do this ahead of time to make the main event even easier. I like to put everything into separate small Tupperware containers, so when we’re finished I can pop leftovers easily in the refrigerator (more on what to do with leftovers below). Don’t forget your pizza sauce and cheese!
  • Cutting boards or a large flat surface: You can clear off your dining room table and put all the toppings in the middle, or use your kitchen counter. I like to give everyone their own cutting board to work on, then I use that to transfer their personal pizza to and from the oven, then cut and serve it back to them.
  • Extra tools: Of course, a pizza cutter comes in handy. If you are using dough that needs to be rolled out, you will also need a rolling pin. If you have kids, you may want one for each so they don’t have to wait on each other.

Pizza Topping Ideas

Another thing I love about doing a make your own pizza dinner is that everyone gets their favorite and in my experience, when a kid makes their own pizza they eat the whole thing!

How to Prep for Your Make Your Own Pizza Family Dinner

Prep for make your own pizza dinner is easy! You can do it the day before, morning of, or right before dinner time. Here’s all you’ll need to do:

  1. If you are using a storebought dough, check the instructions. You may need to set it out an hour or so before you use it.
  2. Cook meats. Cook up any sausage, chicken or beef you’ll be adding to your toppings bar, let them cool and then store in a Tupperware container.
  3. Chop vegetables. Wash and cut your veggie/fruit toppings and put them each into their own container.
  4. Prep remaining ingredients. I even like to put the shredded cheese that comes in a bag into a tupperware with a lid. This is for easy access on the pizza bar.
  5. If you’re using dough that needs to be rolled out, prep each person’s “station” with a light dusting of flour and a rolling pin. If you are using a premade crust or flatbread, you may need to pre-bake them for a few minutes and then place on each person’s station or cutting board.
  6. Set out all the toppings in the middle of the table or counter top and call in the troops to start making their pizzas!
  7. Pop them in the oven (bake temp and time will depend on what type of crust you use) and once they’re cooked, remove, cool, cut and serve!

Ideas for Using Leftovers After Your Pizza Night

We always have leftovers after a make your own pizza dinner, and they can be used in a lot of different ways depending on what type of toppings you prepped. Here are some ideas:

  • Of course, the most obvious is another pizza night but challenge everyone to make a different type of pizza or to make a pizza for someone else in the family.
  • Make pizza quesadillas instead, just use tortillas and a flattop.
  • Make subs using all those yummy leftover toppings.
  • Make a salad – just chop up some romaine and throw all those toppings on top with some dressing and mix it up.
  • Make an omelet or mix the toppings into scrambled eggs.
  • Make frittatas in a muffin pan.
  • Saute leftovers with hash brown potatoes for a potato hash.

That’s it, now you know how to do a make your own pizza dinner family night! This is a great dinner to pair with a family game night or movie night.
